3 More Reasons to Make the Switch to Fiber Optic Cables

by www.fiber-mart.com
Recently, fiber optic cable has been making headlines as it spreads to cities throughout North and Central America . From Atlanta to Miami, and Cuba to Jamaica, there is much anticipation that fiber optic cables will bolster local economies by attracting jobs and citizens to connected areas.

Fiber optic cables, which currently make up about 14.3 percent of the world’s broadband Internet,  are comprised of tightly woven cables of glass. Unlike its alternative, copper cable, which transmits data through electricity, fiber optic cable transmits data via light particles. The difference, therefore, comes down to what is close to speed of light versus the speed of electricity.

Aside from basic transmission speed, however, there are several advantages to installing fiber optic cable in your organization.

We have talked about all kinds of reasons to make the switch to fiber cables.  Here's 3 more.

1. Fiber optic cable can withstand extreme climate conditions

One of the strongest features of fiber optic cable is the fact that it is more versatile than copper cable as far as where it can be placed. While copper cable is sensitive to chemical corrosion and harsh elements such as moisture and extreme temperature, fiber optics are capable of being placed in areas where copper cannot pass through.

2. Copper cable poses hazards to your environment. Fiber cable does not.

Copper cables create sparks. But since fiber optic cable transmits data through light and does not produce an electric current, it cannot catch on fire. This makes it an ideal solution for businesses in areas that pose great fire risks, such as chemical plants.

3. Fiber optic cable is resistant to interference

Another irksome characteristic that can be attributed to the passing of electrical currents through coaxial cable is electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI can be picked up by sensitive equipment and can slow networks down. But fiber optic cable avoids this problem.
