How Does DWDM Red/Blue Band Filter Work?
 
applicationA typical DWDM red/blue band filter is a three-port device. One port is called the “common” while the other two ports respectively called “pass” and “reflect” that provide the conduit for the two wavelength “bands”. These two bands are called Blue band (λ<1543 nm) and the Red band (λ>1547 nm). Reflected port and the pass port must be designated either Red or Blue, and then one band goes through the reflected port, and the other band goes through the pass port. In general, the band, which requires the highest isolation, goes on the pass port. It can be used as a band combiner or a band splitter. When it is a combiner, the bands are combined in the filter and sent to the common port. Conversely, if it is as a splitter, the both bands are fed from the common port and split to the corresponding port (pass port or reflect port). Thus, it is typically used as a bidirectional WDM (ie. One band is sent to the common port, while the other band is delivered from the common port).
 
Where Should I Use DWDM Red/Blue Band Filter?
 
According to its working principle, red/blue band filter can be used in several ways, such as red and blue band separators, application of DWDM system monitoring and erbium doped fiber amplifiers etc. In addition, when using a Red/Blue filter in a DWDM module, a Mux may be combined with a Demux. For example, the Mux combines DWDM channels in the Red band, while the Demux separates DWDM channels in the Blue Band. In other word, using a Red/Blue filter, one can combine the Red Transmit channels and the Blue Receive channels onto a single fiber.
